Lean and Green Manufacturing: The Future is Now

April 19, 2022 by Laurence Bleicher

Anyone managing a manufacturing facility or large warehouse understands the importance of saving energy costs on various systems that interact with each other. There are many problems that arise in a plant that require time, immediate attention and maintenance, which can be alleviated and even avoided by making operations more energy lean and reliable.

While there’s evidence that lean manufacturing will result in lower material and labor costs and higher revenues, we hope to shed light on the benefits of “lean” in relation to green manufacturing.

What is Lean Manufacturing?

Lean manufacturing is a production process based on the concept of maximizing productivity while simultaneously minimizing waste during the manufacturing process. The reasons for wanting to achieve lean manufacturing are reduced lead time and lower operating costs while maintaining product quality.

What is Green Manufacturing?

Green manufacturing establishes production processes and environmentally friendly practices that are designed for sustainability by the use of renewable energy, pollution reduction initiatives, and conservation of natural resources.

Basis for Green & Lean Manufacturing

The intersection between lean and green manufacturing is equipment reliability. When your systems and equipment are in proper working order and in top performance mode, you will achieve higher efficiency and therefore a reduction of material waste as well as fuels, power, and resources. By eliminating catastrophic breakdowns in equipment, providing routine monitoring of systems, and avoiding production interruptions, your overall manufacturing process becomes more efficient (leaner) and more sustainable (greener).

Steps You Can Take to Create A Leaner and Greener Approach

  • Be open and creative in terms of your energy use
  • Analyze your monthly utility bills over a period of time
  • Be open to doing a comprehensive assessment of your energy profile
  • Understand where you have energy leaks or maintenance issues
  • Put together a plan of action to become lean and green
  • Have a strategy in place to educate your staff and your customers

Why Energy LB Resources?

We begin by putting your operations and facility under a microscope. Clients are often surprised at what we find by doing our comprehensive evaluation.  We evaluate your energy use and find ways to optimize consumption and yield of power and resources that will increase productivity, save on equipment maintenance costs, impact positively on the environment, and save money for years, offering an attractive ROI on your capital investment.

Our solutions are grounded in operational data, knowledge of your plant, and a diverse set of technologies that create leaner, more economical, and more sustainable energy profiles.

The Importance of Operating Both Lean and Green

In today’s demanding marketplace, many more educated customers – both B-2-C and B-2-B – are researching how companies reduce their energy footprint and operate in a more lean and green environment.
